It'd been a long road, and Renzo had come far. With the coming of fall just on the horizon, the colt would soon be becoming a stallion, finally reaching the age of three. Before now, he'd been an orphan. His family, as far as he knew, was long gone; killed by a cruel brute over a scrap of land. He'd tried to make the best of his own life afterward, and so far he believed that he'd done a pretty good job. The grullo painted and brindled colt had known that, alone, he was very vulnerable to the dangers of the wild, but he was also bright and intelligent enough to stay low and learn as much as he could over the course of time he'd spent on his own. He'd survived, and well at that, as he wandered over Sagren now no longer in hiding.
So long, he'd spent time alone. But now, now he would soon be a fully grown male and thus shouldn't have to hide anymore. About a year ago, a little less, he'd met someone along his travels. Deep within the forests far to the south, he'd met another male. A one-eyed, bay stallion named Zow. Oh, how Ren missed him now. During their time together, they had developed quite a friendship and the colt took kindly to the older steed. Of course, the colt still didn't find any significance in the way that he missed his friend, as he didn't really have any other examples to compare it to. Ren hadn't much gotten the chance to make many other friends. Well, except for Vixie of course. As the blue roan traveled over the rocks, he could hear behind him the softer sounds of tiny paws tapping over the ground. Turning his head for a quick glance, he smiled as he spotted the little red fox trotting after him, meeting his gaze with her own vibrant golden-brown eyes. He had encountered the little vulpine at the same time he'd met Zow, and while he truly missed the other male, Renzo was surely happy that he still had Vixie as a companion. He wasn't sure why she still followed him to this day, every now and again disappearing to her own little world of foxy wonders that Ren could only imagine. Vix didn't talk much, but when she was around, the colt would often engage in a mostly one-sided conversation with her, speaking of whatever happened to be on his mind. At least it was better than talking to himself, and by now at least he knew that she could understand what he said. At first he'd had his doubts simply because she didn't respond much when he'd spoken to her, but between then and now, she had in fact made conversation with him. They'd come to an understanding that Vixie was a quiet observer and was pleased to watch and listen more than she was to interacting, though she was in fact capable.
Along their travels, Ren had passed many horses, noting many stallions banded with one or more mares. He'd questioned to his young fox friend why she'd thought that males never wandered together, but that'd been one of the times she'd remained silent. It seemed that in her eyes, if she allowed him to question her and run things by her, and kept silent, he would figure out the answer or solution himself. And, it seemed, she'd been right. Ren had soon discovered that occasionally stallions did roam together and were called "bachelors". It'd just been that the colt thought to himself that something wasn't altogether right with the herds or harems he'd come across, though he simply couldn't put a hoof down on what. However, as the blue roan horse and the red fox continued to wander the plains together, Ren's thoughts again returned to his long-lost friend. He wondered how the other stallion was faring these days.
"Water's this way." The sudden alert tone, spoken in a lighter-toned voice, from his companion behind him was a surprise. He faltered in his normally graceful steps to see Vixie loping off to the right. Renzo smiled after shaking off his surprise. The little femme always seemed to know when he was off in a daze, lost in thought, but always in-tuned to both their needs. They'd gone quite a way over the vast terrain without spotting water, and now that he'd realized it, he was quite thirsty. So, easily, the soon-to-be stallion fell into step behind her, having to kick his pace up into a brisk trot to keep up with his leggy and lighter companion. Still, the minor detraction did little to really keep his mind swayed from its ponderings.
"Vixie?" He called to her in a softer tone, to which he was only answered by the fox with her ears flicking backward to indicate she was listening. He really wasn't even sure if that was truly her name or if it was just the calling that she'd accepted as the one he'd given to her all those months ago, though she'd never offered any other to replace it. "Am I weird?" When the inquiry left his lips, it'd sounded like a dumb question, even to him. A smile was spreading across his lips even before his furry little friend glanced over her dainty shoulder at him, the most curious expression in her eyes. "I mean, I know I must be weird to you, but do you think I stand out from my species?" He wasn't really getting his point across, but even he didn't truly know what the hell he was talking about. The young, female fox parted her toothy jaws and let it grow into a rapid yawn before she shook her head and returned her gaze to the trail before her. It was a laughable little action, and one he'd seen many times before, most often when his companion had been asked a question deemed irrelevant by her.
"If you didn't stand out from your species, do you think I would be hanging around you as much as I do?" Her tone was bored, though her voice itself always carried that sly undertone that had Ren always wondering what she was really thinking or telling him. Given what she told him, though, it didn't really do much to sate whatever curiosity had him inquiring of her to begin with, but he couldn't really blame her for not giving him the answer he sought.
"Uhh, thanks! I think.." His tone, on the other hand, was a bit confused, even if lightened by his endless sense of humor. It seemed like she'd complimented him, though he wasn't altogether certain. But regardless, he let it go for now. Within moments, a small pool came into view up ahead of the odd pair of mammals. Vixie was no longer paying any mind to the stallion behind her as she trotted right on up and began to sip from the shallow depth. Renzo smiled at his companion, thinking he probably found her just as intriguing as she found him and thus was most likely the foundation of their little alliance. Even so, he was happy to have her around, for an odd relationship was still at least a relationship.
