Oh what a bright, sunny day! The warm rays of the big blue ball burning in the sky were just to irresistible to ignore. Even on this winter afternoon, they somehow reached down, seeping right through the chilly breeze and into the little mare’s delicate skin, warming her in this cold season. If only the days would get so sunny and bright more often at this time of the year. If only she could wake up to days like this for the rest of her life. But no, this was a rare gem in the dead of winter. But it was a gem she wouldn’t put to waste.
Taking in a deep breath, she filled her little lungs with the crisp air around her just as a blue jay went swooping by overhead. Oh goody! A friend! She moved after it, frolicking through the meadow on legs that might as well of been made of springs. They carried her across the ground at a moderate pace… at least for her. Being so small, she couldn’t quite make up the ground that many did. Yet, things such as this never got to the female, for she was much to off in her own fantasy world filled with baby bunnies and cute, fluffed up birds. Well… there weren’t any baby bunnies right now, but she still liked to think there were. Life just couldn’t get any better. “Oh, little birdy!” she called with a smile “Come and pl-”. Swoosh! went a dark figure appearing in the sky overhead. A loud squawk could be heard, one of shock and filled with pain. The mare screeched to a halt, mouth agape and deep brown eyes filled with horror. The dark figure carried the little bird off with huge, menacing talons. The blue jay was no more.
She was stunned. Stunned and frightened to the point she couldn’t do anything except stand there, petite hooves glued to the ground. Despite how frozen she appeared on the outside, her mind was swirling. Oh my god! she thought, terrified and wondering how such a dark, winged creature could exist in her world. How had it gotten in? It wasn’t supposed to exist! Not here, at least. Maybe in someone else’s head, but not hers! Hers was filled with cute creatures! Not menacing ones! The shriek of a predator filled her ears, and she watched in dread as it came back for more, clawed talons stretched out towards her.
Eyes shot open, a loud gasp escaping into the cold, dark air as she stumbled onto shaky legs. Faith searched around her, trying to make out any threats in the dim light. She expected to see talons. Huge, menacing talons. There was nothing, though. Only trees, looming far, far above her. Their branches were outlined against the starry sky, stretching out in every direction. But, there were no claws. Nothing after her. Nothing ready to pick her up and carry her away. It had all been a nightmare. She’d had many of these throughout her life. They always started out peaceful and serene. They always started out how she wished the world was. But, they always ended in her nearly dying.
Sighing, she ambled along in the gloomy woods, carefully watching her hooves and stepping over the many protruding roots jutting out from the hard earth. She wondered why her mind liked to play these tricks on her. So many times the little mare had woken up, sweating and scared for her life. So many times her nights had gone sleepless. In fact, Faith couldn’t remember when this had all started, or what had caused it to start. All she knew, is that it seemed impossible to get rid of them.
She stopped, glancing around for a few seconds and letting her ears drop back, the whites of her eyes showing as an ever so frequent feeling crept up on her. Loneliness. It crawled over her frame, sinking deep within. And just like that, the woods were that much more frightening. Faith could be a confident and fun loving mare… but not alone. And not in the dark. And defiantly not after one of her nightmares. An owl hooted off somewhere in the darkness, as if to taunt her. She couldn’t help but shrink back against the trunk of a massive tree, hoping to disappear into it.

Night was such a lovely time, thought the mare of such small stature as she pranced along through the trees. Bi-colored eyes roamed over her surroundings, from the leaves long-dead strewn about on the forest floor to the trees which stood to tower much higher over her head than say a ’normal-sized’ horse, and further still to the branches intertwining each other and skewing her view of the starry sky. The moon above peeked through the boughs, not yet quite full, but all the more beautiful to her. It was rather cold this night, and the little painted mare was surprised not to see any snow decorating the earth. She would have been happy to see it, for something about the cold matter was intriguing and exciting to her. But admittedly, she thought with a laugh bubbling close to the surface within her, a lot of things seemed to have that affect on her. Nothing wrong with that in her mind, though. The cold itself didn’t bother the small mare presently, as she’d been in motion for quite some time now and the steady flow of blood and oxygen through her body was enough to keep her warmed and comfortable. The trees themselves even helped, mostly blocking the bitter-crisp winds that occasionally swept across the lands this night. Helped, too, that her body was close to the ground and better able to absorb warmth. Being a miniature horse, Zamara was well accustomed to everything around her being huge in comparison. Perhaps she should be afraid to be bouncing through such a deep, dark wooded area such as this at night, but the little chestnut tovero femme couldn’t bring herself to worry too much.
With a blissful smile planted upon her maw and an overall calmness to her aura, she trotted onward, her red-laced white mane tapping her painted neck gently. This tiny mare was no fool, however, and though she was just about completely at ease with herself and her surroundings, Mara knew well the dangers of the world. Just over a year ago, a terrible tragedy had befallen her when she and her mother had been walking in some unknown territory. Always the wanderer-types, the two mares had seen much of the world and what it had to offer in terms of scenery and atmosphere. Traveling through a lightly forested area at the base of a mountain, Zamara especially had never been expecting such a vicious attack. A cougar had been laying in wait along the path they’d chosen, and as soon as they caught wind of it, it made itself known. The red and white painted mare would never forget the fear that had blossomed within her like a wildfire and had her frozen until her mother’s frantic voice broke through the fuzz in her brain. ”Run, Mara! Quickly!” She’d never even gotten to question her dam’s intentions before she’d made a move to draw the huge cat’s attention.. Away from her; to protect her. Too afraid to do anything else, Mar had run fast and far with tears burning her eyes from fear for her life and misery for the loss of her mother’s. ”Stay strong, run fast, and be free!” Those had been the last words she’d ever hear from her dam, and the very words she’d vowed to live by.
A year later, Mara was now at age four, and was living quite well for herself. Strong, fast, and free were the three things she did best, and though she still often missed her mother, she knew she’d always live in her heart. That knowledge alone was one major thing that helped her carry on, though Zamara couldn’t help often feeling so lonely. She had made one friend recently, with a quirky little ball of sunshine. Her name had been Maro, and though quite young, she now had a special place in the mare’s heart. Mara still couldn’t quite figure out the why, but the filly had renamed her “Waffle” and even as she couldn’t say she favored the nickname, the mare hadn’t been able to resist the young one’s charm. With a light toss of her head, the light of the moon reflecting in her mismatched eyes, she smiled just before she heard the soft hooting of an owl somewhere in the near-distance. Dainty little hooves slowed to a walk as her ears perked up to listen. She’d heard something else that had accompanied the call of the nocturnal bird, though it seemed to have stopped just afterward. Mara very well could have been mistaken, but her heart jumped regardless as she swore to herself that it’d been the sound of soft footfall and very likely from that of another equine. Lifting her muzzle a bit, her nares flared to capture any scent of another as she turned her body in the direction she thought she’d heard it. It was so hard to determine, though! Mara had only just caught the hint of a sound and was going simply off the hope that she would not be alone for long. Ears swiveling atop her pretty little head, eyes searching all around, she supposed there was only one real way for her to find out. ”H-Hello?” She called out softly, just the lightest hint of shyness in her tone. With no scent and no real, concrete evidence of the other- if there was another- it was impossible to guess anything about them. There was no telling if the sound she’d heard had been from a stallion or a mare, or even from a horse at all. She would just have to hope they were nice, whoever and whatever they were. A bit stronger this time, she called out again. ”Is someone there?” And then she stopped her movements, head turning so that she could watch from every angle, listening and smelling for any sign of life at all.
OOC: longer than I had thought it would be xD hope it‘s okay..[/size]

There was a voice, then, calling out through the darkness. Faith couldn’t catch what exactly had been spoken, but the tone sounded like that of another mare. Intrigued and desperate for some company on this terrifying night, the little palomino slowly crept away from the massive tree, head hanging low as she scurried over to the next trunk, and then the next and so forth. All the while, she was getting closer to the direction that the voice had come from. Or, at least she hoped she was. It didn’t take more than couple minutes of tree hopping to find out, though, for the shape of another small equine appeared in the dark. Perhaps the little mare should have been more cautious of strangers, but on this terrifyingly lone night she wasn’t. She went right up to the other. “Oh thank god!” she declared, sounding out of breath “I thought something was going to eat me”. She said it as if the presence of the red and white mare had saved her.
Large, innocent eyes went wide as she looked at the other. To her utmost amazement, the other mare was smaller! “You’re so short!” she blurted out, though it wasn’t meant as an insult. In fact, her tone had become bright and excited. This was the first time she had come across someone smaller than her, and for the longest while, the mare had believed she never would. But, here before her, was a tinier mare. Perhaps a bit, well, bulkier in bone, but in height she had her beat.

At first, the little mare had started to think she was just imagining she'd heard anything at all. Shaking her small dial of a head, she reached down to grab a mouthful of grass, just to have something to munch on so she wouldn't think anymore of the sound she thought she heard. But then, as she began to walk again, she swore she heard it again! Just a soft rustling, but it was there. Wasn't it? She waited, but didn't hear it again, so she continued walking, ears fidgeting to eagerly capture the sound if it happened again. And then it did! This time she was sure of it. The sound was growing closer. What she didn't understand, however, was that it only approached in short bursts. Like it was hiding? Was she being stalked? The thought sent a shiver of fear up her spine. For a mare as small as she, there were a lot more dangers in the world compared to others, though she liked to think that she was capable of finding a way out of it. But there was just something odd about whatever was approaching her. She stayed in place now, ears erect, bicolored eyes watching closely off in the distance for any sign of the other. She still could not catch its scent, which should have bothered her, but she was now more curious than anything. Before too long, she was able to catch glimpses of a figure hopping from tree to tree. She tilted her head, a smile coming to her lips. What on earth? Moonlight reflected off a soft, white mane and tail, and Zamara was relieved to have her suspicions confirmed. It was a horse that was approaching, and a small one at that! Her heart began to race at the realization that she was not the only miniature horse in the Lands! Waiting eagerly, but patient, she grinned widely as the other finally came out of hiding and came to stand before her. It was a mare, and a pretty one at that. As the other spoke, she just smiled and shook her head. "No worries! It seems really quiet tonight." And then, she was quick to assess that even while the other was a mini like her, the palomino was still taller by a few inches. Apparently, the other mare had realized this too as she suddenly exclaimed about her stature. One might expect her to get all upset and hurt about that, but Mara only laughed, tossing her head high. "Yes.. I don't think you could find anyone smaller than me." She said, laughing again. Unfortunately, it wasn't much of a joke. Mara was sure that she was the smallest horse in the whole, big world, but it no longer bothered her. She was who she was, after all. "I'm Zamara. What's your name?" And such was exactly what she was known for. While she may be small, she had a huge personality; friendly and bold to boot. Mara was never quick to judge, and always quick to make friends. Unless of course, the other didn't want to be friends. But she wouldn't think about that now.
