Alright, so, while you are here threading and posting on Equorum, you may come across terms that you need to be familiar with. Some of you are members that are coming from sites that don't even have horses to RP, so it's expected that most of the terms used for horses will be unfamiliar to you. Never fear, though! Above is a horse image, complete with names and such -- a visual for those who learn/understand better by looking at things, rather than from description alone.
Parts that usually cause for confusion (listed above)
- Crest: The line of muscle behind the ears. Horses with good head carriage have this muscle defined more than those who don't. The crest is usually more defined in stallions than it is in geldings or mares.
- Poll: The part of the head that it between both ears. This is essentially the top of the forehead, where the "bangs" (or forelock) begin.
- Point of Hip: This is essentially as it says: the point of the horse's hip. Some may think that it is located at the edge of the hip, where there is a "point" formed, but it is meant to be at the point made while looking at a horse head on.
- Hock: Essentially this is the knee of the horse. It is not uncommon that when a horse whisks its tail around, it will brush against the hocks, so this term can be useful when describing a horse's efforts in detering flies, or even portraying tension.
- Stifle: The top muscle of the leg, connecting through the flank to the abdomen. This muscle also lowers to the top of the Gaskin, which is the second largest and easily noticeable muscle in the back leg.
